Our story

Miss S began in 2013 over tea and biscuits. Fiona and Tracey were both working with a charity that had recently suffered a severe funding cut.

But at least it was still alive – many, many arts organisations and smaller charities died through lack of funding at this time.

They hit upon the idea of forming a hub of various disciplines that not-for-profits could dip into when they needed a marketing person, bookkeeper, FD or PA for a day, or a week, rather than go through the hassles of employing staff they weren’t sure they could afford.

This hub was going to be named Miss Sanderson Inc because Tracey thought that Fiona could pull off that whole 1940’s secretary vibe with horn-rimmed specs and her hair in a tight bun. Never one to court attention, Fiona declined and asked “what about calling it Miss S? Then we can be anything we want to be”. It is surprising how creative someone can be when they want to dodge the spotlight.

Since then Miss S has continued to evolve. Fiona has even started presenting webinars!

We have gained staff and our team has defined our purpose as “helping people help people” and we proudly call ourselves “accountants for the community”. We are following our passion to make numbers make sense and to empower people so that their organisation can be successful and sustainable. In doing so, we have been able to help many more people and causes than any one of us could have helped alone.

Our desire to help has meant our original intentions of working with the not-for-profit sector is still at the forefront of our purpose. We now work predominantly with CIC’s, charities, social enterprises, all other forms of not-for-profit organisation and the broadest definition of creatives.

We love our work and we enjoy seeing so much achievement through our client’s successes.

In 2021 after a random discussion whilst driving to Wales – as you do – we decided that being a limited company was not the right image for us.  We’ve never strived for huge profits, and we continue to offer a lot of pro-bono time to our clients and the communities around us. We really were operating as a social enterprise ourselves, and to show our clients that we mean what we say and really do know what we’re talking about, we converted to a Community Interest Company (CIC) in early 2022.

Perhaps not an exciting change for many people, but for us it means that so many more avenues have opened up to us.  We have always wanted to offer free or reduced fees services to those organisations who desperately need our support but just simply do not have the cash flow for it.  Now we can.  Being a CIC gives us opportunities to apply for funding so that we can continue to offer more and more not-for-profits and creatives numbers and strategy support without stretching their budgets too far.
